Philodendron El Choco × Billietiae Variegated
A hybrid of two already compelling parents, this cross brings together Philodendron 'El Choco Red' — a velvety, heart-leaved species from the Chocó region of Colombia prized for its plush deep green surface and coppery-red new growth — with the elongated elegance and distinctive orange-yellow petioles of Philodendron billietiae. The variegated form layers lime and yellow-green marbling across this already striking combination, resulting in broad, heart-shaped leaves that carry the rounded form of the El Choco parent, a deep forest green base splashed and streaked with lighter lime-green variegation in soft, painterly patterns, and the characteristic reddish-brown petioles of the El Choco lineage adding further color contrast. The variegation is green-on-green in character — subtle and sophisticated rather than high-contrast — giving this hybrid a refined, almost understated beauty that sets it apart from more dramatic white or cream variegated aroids. Still genuinely scarce in cultivation and representing one of the more visually distinctive hybrid crosses in the current collector market.
- Light: Bright indirect light essential for maintaining vivid lime-green variegation. Insufficient light mutes the color differential between the two green tones and slows growth. No direct sun.
- Water: Water when top 1-2" of medium is dry. Excellent drainage essential — never allow roots to sit in standing water. Consistent moisture without waterlogging keeps growth steady.
- Humidity: 60-70%+ preferred. A humidifier is strongly recommended, especially in air-conditioned environments.
- Soil: Chunky, well-draining aroid mix — coco coir, perlite, and orchid bark. Provide a moss pole or trellis — both parent species are climbers and vertical support encourages larger mature leaf development.
- Fertilizer: Balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength every 2-4 weeks during active growth. Reduce in winter.
- Temperature: 65-85°F (18-29°C). Keep above 60°F. No cold drafts or AC vents.
- Toxicity: Toxic to humans and pets if ingested. Contains calcium oxalate crystals causing irritation and swelling of the mouth, throat, and digestive tract.
